HMS Queen Elizabeth
The HMS Queen Elizabeth is on its maiden operational voyage to take part in the fight against the Islamic State. Stealth jets from the £3bn aircraft carrier are for the first time taking part in combat missions over Iraq as part of Operation Shader. But in the eastern Mediterranean, Russian surveillance is also keeping the crew on alert. Captain James Blackmore, Commander of the Airgroup, confirmed they had seen a “mixture” of Russian Sukhois and Migs and that they were in “visual range of the pilots”.
